AUTOCLAVE PROCEDURES

Effective Sterilization: Conscientious, dependable and skilled operator

Some techniques operators should be familiar with include:

  • use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
    • heat-resistant autoclave gloves for loading and unloading autoclave
    • fluid-resistant gloves to eliminate contact with contaminated wastes
    • lab coat to protect your apparel
    • splash goggles if a splash hazard is present
  • minimization of aerosol formation
  • prevention of waste spillage during autoclave loading and unloading
  • prevention of burns from handling hot contents
  • management/procedure for managing spills

Biosafety training is available though ORCBS and includes information about these techniques and other aspects of autoclave safety and use. An operator can also ensure the autoclave is effectively sterilizing biohazardous waste by periodically checking if the temperature and pressure necessary for the decontamination of biohazardous wastes is reached. These parameters are determined by yearly testing and listed on posted autoclave parameter signs.

DO NOT override autoclave's built-in safety control features under any circumstance; if you suspect there is a problem with your autoclave’s performance, contact your autoclave repair representative for assistance.
