AUTOCLAVE PROCEDURES

Causes of Autoclave Failure

The reasons behind autoclave failure usually fall into two categories-failure of the operator or mechanical failure. Mistakes made by the operator may include:
  • improper use of containers that block access of steam to the load
  • sealing the bag close before autoclaving
  • not adding water to the load before autoclaving
  • autoclaving a bag of waste that is too large for the autoclave
  • Over-filling an autoclave bag.

Mechanical failure needs to be attended to by a trained technician. Contact the service company responsible for the maintenance of your autoclave or your department's safety representative for more information.
