Michigan
State University has over 120 autoclaves located on the main
campus. These autoclaves play an essential role in allowing
researchers to obtain sterile materials as well as allowing
for the destruction of infectious waste before removal from
campus. Two thirds of the autoclaves on campus are used for
the inactivation of infectious waste. In an effort to better
understand and anticipate MSU's biohazardous waste needs, the
Office of Radiation, Chemical, and Biological Safety (ORCBS)
has implemented a Biohazardous Waste Tracking Program. |
| The Biohazardous
Waste Tracking Program is a voluntary program that will allow
us to quantify the biohazardous waste that MSU generates, treats
by autoclave, and sends to the landfill. This information will
help us as we anticipate the biohazardous waste disposal needs
of the MSU scientific community in the next decade.
(For a
definition of Biohazardous
Waste - see the Waste Disposal Guide; for additional information
see the Biohazardous
Section of the Waste Disposal Guide)

A clipboard
with the new gold colored "Biohazardous Waste Tracking
Program Sheets" (click here
to see the sheet) have been placed near every autoclave
that is used to inactivate biohazardous waste. Every time a
bag of biohazardous waste is placed in an autoclave we would
appreciate it if the user would check the appropriate box (small,
medium, or large bag) on the sheet. The ORCBS staff will tally
the boxes and replace the sheets on a monthly basis. If you
have any questions please contact the Biological Safety Assistant
at 432-5019. |
