UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT RESPONSIBILITY

In order to increase the effectiveness of this asbestos management program, the following responsibilities are designated:

Employees: Do not damage, disturb, or remove asbestos-containing materials. Contact your supervisor to have a suspect material tested. Contact your supervisor to report asbestos debris or damaged asbestos materials.

Supervisors: Assure that affected employees have received current asbestos training. Contact the Office of Environmental and Occupational Safety for training information. Ensure that employees are following proper work procedures while handling ACM. Contact the Physical Plant for testing of suspect materials or for clean up/repair if ACM is accidentally disturbed.

Physical Plant: Sample suspect materials as needed/requested. Submit copies of all sample results (including copy of laboratory data) to the Office of Environmental and Occupational Safety. Respond to reports of accidental disturbances for clean up or repair. Notify the Office of Environmental and Occupational Safety prior to conducting any abatement activities. Send copies of all air monitoring results from abatement activities to the Office of Environmental and Occupational Safety.

Engineering and Architectural Services: Coordinate with the Office of Environmental and Occupational Safety and Physical Plant when renovations and demolitions are planned to obtain building surveys and material sample results and when scheduling abatement work. Provide the Office of Environmental and Occupational Safety with a copy of all building survey information and air sampling results from abatement activities as they are obtained.

Office of Environmental and Occupational Safety: Maintain the Asbestos Management Program and revise as necessary. Provide or coordinate necessary asbestos training. Maintain records of all building surveys, material sampling, training, abatement activities, and air monitoring. Collect samples of suspected ACM. Coordinate survey results with GIS. Meet with all regulatory agencies as needed for inspections and asbestos issues.

Asbestos Abatement Contractors: All outside asbestos abatement contractors are to follow the Asbestos Abatement Standard, which will be included on all bid specifications. All contractors are required to be pre-qualified by the Office of Environmental and Occupational Safety office in order to perform work on campus. A list of the requirements for pre-qualification is located in Appendix 1.
