Bioassays

Conditions of the broad license issued by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) mandates that bioassays are required for workers using certain types and amounts of radioisotopes.

Individuals performing or observing iodinations where one millicurie or more of 125I is used are required to obtain a thyroid scan after the iodination or use of the sodium iodide or potassium iodide stock solution. A baseline thyroid scan should be conducted on workers who have not previously used these kinds of 125I at Michigan State University. Individuals must receive a thyroid scan bioassay with the ORCBS at least 24 hours after each iodination or use of free radioiodine, but not more than one week afterwards.

Also, individuals handling greater than or equal to100 mCi of tritium (3H) must submit a urine sample to the ORCBS for bioassay within 24 hours of the handling. This bioassay must be performed each time this amount of tritium is handled. Contact the ORCBS for further details prior to urine bioassays.

If there appears to be a likelihood that a significant internal exposure has occurred, the Radiation Safety Officer may require further bioassays as deemed necessary.
