Ordering Radioactive Materials

Any receipt of radioactive materials must be authorized by the ORCBS. Authorization is based on prior approval by the Radiation Safety Committee as described earlier. All requisitions should be sent to the purchasing department directly, who will contact the ORCBS to obtain authorization to order. The information that purchasing needs from the approved user is the name of the principal investigator ordering the material, account number, element and mass number, chemical form, activity and company from which the radioisotope will be purchased. Every shipment of radioactive material received must be inventoried.

Each shipment received by project leaders, such as gifts, electron capture devices, or any other device containing a radioactive source or radioactive material must be reported to the ORCBS so that the material may be tracked in the inventory database and summed with the campus totals. This is to prevent an individual principal investigator or the campus from exceeding individual approval or MSU license possession limits.
